I remember when I preformed this in High School and I actually cried when I first heard this song. I would sing my heart out in each performance to this song specifically. Many of us have had to leave those places in which we grew up, our own little Anatevkas.

@JohanTW I wish we had, too...
Any time you see a film or documentary, and the Jews are leaving Russia at this time...
It's like a horror movie--you want to warn them, "No! Don't go there!" :/
(No offense intended to Germans, of course, the German people are good people...it was just a very, VERY bad time...and "very, VERY bad" doesn't do it justice, but words fail in spots like this...still, I like the sly Jewish humor at the end here--"Maybe that's why we always wear our hats.)
:)

Oh trust me, so do we. Well, I can't speak for us collectively of course, but I sure as hell would. I love Scandinavia.

KT Perry based her song ET off of this song

Beautiful montage by the director--he really captured the soul of a people wedded to a place (along with the song of course)--even on the bleak day, all, all is beautiful.

We did this at my high school, my senior year. All of the seniors were crying or almost crying when we sang this part, especially at the last performance-we were all thinking of how we'd miss our personal Anatevka when we graduated. Every lyric had so much more meaning. "Where I know everyone I meet"-I still get teary hearing this. |
